Volleyball Victoria is committed to offering opportunities for people to be involved with Para Volleyball.
The term ParaVolley is used to refer to the two disciplines of Sitting Volleyball and Beach ParaVolley.
Volleyball is a tactical team sport that involves hitting a ball over a net using closed hands. The object is to keep the ball volleying over the net without permitting it to touch the ground. A point is earned each time a player grounds a ball in the opponents’ court.
Sitting volleyball can be played by anyone, especially and including athletes of all abilities, however only at the international performance level do athletes have to be classified with a disability. It is played on the floor with a lower, shorter net and with six players per side. While there are some minor rule differences to FIVB indoor volleyball, there are some unique rules such as being allowed to block the serve!
Beach ParaVolley is played by athletes who can stand and move around on the sand. It is played on the same court as able-bodied Beach Volleyball, with the only difference being Beach ParaVolley has teams of three whereas FIVB Beach Volleyball has traditionally 2 per side.
While Sitting Volleyball is currently a Paralympic Sport however Beach ParaVolley is not yet adopted despite compaigns from World ParaVolley and supporting organisations.
